The study centre can now offer an exciting schedule of professional development courses run by leading practitioners in their field.  Courses include refreshments and lunch and are based in the newly refurbished Study Centre at Swindon Town Football Club.

Introducing Modern Foreign Languages through Podcasting.

Tutor: Mark Pentleton - Apple Distinguished Educator.

 How can you make the learning and teaching of modern foreign languages exciting and relevant for the 21st Century.  Through creating podcasts.

Mark Pentleton is the expert in this field, he speaks 10 foreign languages fluently, he works across Scotland helping schools with mfl podcast  projects and  runs his own highly successful worldwide mfl business that allows anyone to download podcasts to their computer or their iphone.  

 

Mark will show you how you can use existing podcasts to introduce students to modern foreign languages in an exciting cross curricular way with award winning examples from schools in Scotland.

He will then take you through how to develop your own mfl podcasts and have them published on the web. 

 

An introduction to Apple Mac Technology

This half day course will help you decide if Apple Macs are for you. It will be a hands on course where we will take you through how a Mac works and some of the very popular applications such as Garageband for digital music creation and podcasting, iphoto with its face recognition feature, imovie to create your own movies and then how to export them in a variety of formats.

 

There will be time for you to explore iworks and discover keynote and number works.

 

Istop Animation

Tutors: Martin Turnbull & Tom Pickerell AT Computers

This course will take you through istop animation using ican animate sioftware. You will learn how to story board, create different animation scenes then how to export them to a movie programme where you will add music, dialogue, special effects and titles to your project.

You will be able to see examples of students work and teachers planned projects using animation.

 

 An introduction to Movie Making.

Friday 25th June

This course will take you through story boarding, creating good ideas for good movie projects.  You will be shown filming techniques and how to transfer the footage into imovie program.  You will then be shown how to edit your project, add titles, music, transitions and special effects. You will then be shown how to export the file in various formats you you can take it away on your flash drive, mobile phone or ipod.

 

CONTROL TECHNOLOGY

These professional development courses are led by Rob Widger the Education Manager of DACTA Ltd.

 

Rob Widger has been a teacher and LEA adviser focusing on control technology.  Now he divides his time between training people - from teachers and students to distributors and partners – on how to get the most out of the LEGO Education offering, and developing other LEGO projects.

He visits schools - even those outside the UK - to show teachers how to use the LEGO Education products, giving them demonstrations of the Science, Energy and Robotics products that they can integrate into their everyday teaching.

 

An  Introduction to WeDo for Primary School Teachers

Friday 12th March

 Wedo is the exciting new product from Lego which is very affordable and has new user friendly software.  Watch Rob use the Wedo set to introduce goal line technology to year 2/3 pupils.

The  course will look at the new WeDo control system aimed at Key Stages 1 and 2.  The course will cover the LEGO philosophy of learning and delegates will get the opportunity to build and program a LEGO model.  Delegates will then be shown various links to curriculum areas such as literacy and numeracy.  The course price includes 1 WeDo set and a single user of the LEGO software.  This course is suitable to complete novices for the control area of the curriculum. 

 

NXT robots How to make best use of NXT Control Technology

for Secondary School Teachers

Wednesday 10th February

A course looking at the NXT MINDSTORMS system at Key Stages 3 and 4.  The course will cover the LEGO philosophy of learning and delegates will get the opportunity to build and program a LEGO model.  Delegates will be shown the basics of the NXT software and how it can relate to areas of the secondary school curriculum as well as after school clubs and competitions. 

The course will be supported by Ivan Kirk from Dorcan Technology College who supports the study centres robotics programme and is a national judge for first Lego League.
